Our Conductor, Kathleen M. Penza
The founder and president of the BLACKSTONE VALLEY COMMUNITY CONCERT BAND, Kathleen Penza has achieved a fine reputation as a dedicated musician, teacher and leader of this fine group of instrumentalists. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Lowell College of Music in 1984, and has since been employed as a Band Director & Music Educator in several area school districts. Since 1997, she has served in her current role as the Fine Arts Coordinator & Director of Middle School Bands in the Uxbridge Public Schools. In this experience, she has been the prime mover of a strong middle school music education program. She is directly responsible for scheduling, instructing and rehearsing over 180 students in the middle school. Conducting 3 concert bands of varying degrees of ability, she guides each student through his/her own musical journey, dedicating herself toward the full educational development of each student in her charge.
Yet Perhaps her greatest continuing community effort began several years ago. Prompted by her own belief that the community was lacking significant musical opportunities and involvement for the people of the Blackstone Valley, she dedicated herself toward the establishment of the Blackstone Community Concert Band. She pursued the efforts to establish the non-profit charter, the required grants & funding, the equipment, the musical library, the local musicians, and provide the leadership to produce what is now a 50-60 member concert band that provides an outlet for community members of all ages to play music or simply to enjoy the extensive free concerts scheduled throughout the year.
Recently, Kathleen was honored as a recipient of the 2010 Massachusetts Unsung Heroine Award for her significant musical contributions to the local community. Her conscientious efforts and love of music, have resulted in providing significant musical memories to the local communities. The BVCCB has truly become one of the great treasures in this valley, providing enjoyable musical experiences for all in and around these surrounding towns.
